Apple's App Store Growing Fast
Ryan Kim, San Francisco Chronicle, July 15, 2009 www.sfgate.com/blogs/tech
In just its first year, Apple's iPhone App Store has recorded 1.5 billion
downloads and rolled out 65,000 apps.
Apple also has more than 100,000 developers in its iPhone Developer
Program.
These are all new figures based on the Saturday anniversary of the App
Store.
"The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both
scale and quality," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO.
"With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others
to catch up."
It's a pretty impressive set of metrics when you think about it.
And it looks like the iPhone OS 3.0 has prompted a new wave of apps. On
June 8, at the Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced it had
tallied 50,000 apps. That means in a little more than a month, Apple has
received 15,000 more apps. That's more than what Google's Android Market
has overall.
The pace of downloads is also picking up. Apple announced April 23, with
the store open nine months, that it had served up its 1 billionth
download. That means in less than three months, the store recorded 500
million more downloads.
Overall, Apple said it has sold more than 40 million iPhone and iPod
Touches, including 1 million iPhone 3GS units on its first weekend last
month.
