[Yr7-10it] Vels reporting formats..

Sounds nice Roland but what is IT?
Is it a discipline?
Maths, science, English, IT ....
Or does it intermingle with the other disciplines
If it is a discipline, is it programming?
Or is ICT for
Eg for communicating, for creating, for visualising thinking
So skilled usage of software and systems would qualify
The standards are so broad one could go either way....
Which I think is ok....i like the broadness there
But do progression points make sense under that breadth ....
Do you make your own interpretation of progression points
Eg, 5.25, in use of google sketch up for creating, might be quite different to 5.25 in Scratch for creating (and both overlap with visualising thinking)
I can see progression in learning in both environments, but would need customising
Is that how you are doing it?
Cheers
Rob

Subject: Re: [Yr7-10it] Vels reporting formats..
This was one of the reasons why we kept stand-alone IT subjects. It was felt that secondary teachers that spent a couple of years studying part-time to pick up an IT method teaching tag would be best placed to assess a progression point for a student. We can both encourage IT rich classrooms and still have one subject that specifically assesses IT. Our brief flirtation with the smearing of IT across the curriculum was a dumbing-down of activities and a smudging of results. We didn't have a better apraisal of a student's IT skills by just adding more teachers that mark an IT progression point. We could all eat from the IT cake, only one of us needed to stand on the scales.
Staff here were happier with the idea of less marking and better assessment on what was being marked. Part of the problem of adding noodles into this assessment soup is that is is a numerical average going on behind the scenes. If I elected to add some maths progression points into my class, my score is going to be split with the maths teacher ... add other teachers and the contribution of by that maths professional to a particular students score is going to be further diluted.
We felt that it was better to do it properly, measure it once, and spend the time saved on teaching an rich curriculum. Not everything we teach needs to be measured or reported upon but what we do, should be done carefully, correctly with the dignified contribution by the best corresponding professional.

Hi fellow listers,
I am just putting some fine tuning to VELSifying the IT curriculum here and now am turning my attentions to the actual reports formats for final reporting this year...yep, we're doin' it at last!
To assist my format quest, I am seeking out suitable formats to use for years 7-10, which can/may be adapted for our needs here.
We presently run the 7-10 I.T. subjects as standalone subjects. The content however, can still be related and fathomed via other curriculum areas. ie teach the IT skills and sometimes share topics across subject areas.
If there are any of you out there willing to, and able to, share your formats (perhaps screen shots would be a good starter), this little black duck would be most eternally grateful. I'm sorta flying solo here with this one.
Quack!
Kent.

Hello Caterina
Glad I could be of help. We haven't changed over to CS3 yet because we will
need to upgrade a lot of computers to do so. But we're buying about 60 more
at the end of this year so they will have CS3 Master Collection which has
just about every application known to man! Of course the remaining hundreds
will only have CS2 and the Macromedia MX versions which means more work for
our poor overworked technicians. From what I've seen, the CS3 is
super-wizz-bang and does wonderful things. But that doesn't mean that CS2
isn't terrific because it is. In the end of things, it just comes down to
finances.
For instance, I would like to have the Year 10 Packaging/Product Design
students use CS3 to create a mobile phone background with Flash elements (it
appeals to them!) I saw it on a conference recently and was very enthused.
But it doesn't work in CS2 so I have to wait until next year.
I've used a huge number of exercises from the Natcoll Dreamweaver, Flash,
Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop books and have been pleased with all of
them. They are succinctly written and give good additional tips. In fact, I
think I've bought just about the entire range of their books.
I hope it's useful.

Hi Diane,
Thank you as I had no idea there are student textbooks available for Flash
and etc.
Are you actually using any of the new features in class delivered in
Flash CS3? Is there a benefit as our school is still on the MX version? We
teach Flash in year 8 & 9.
Caterina
