A week ago I downloaded 2008 Microsoft Visual Web Developer (asp.net
express)

(its part of Visual Studio - I think schools can get the professional
box and dice for fairly minimal cost - and the Express versions are free
anyway - and look really good)

Anyway, I watched some online video, read some tutes, and quickly got a
database driven site running with the tool

Much more efficient than classic ASP (both VB and JS) which I had
previously used

(ie now, I haven't yet written a line of code, to get the same result
that used to be a labour intensive mix of SQL / HTML and VB - the
authoring environment does a lot it for you now - and you can edit the
source if you want)

there are a number of gotchas - some of the Quick Start samples are
flawed
(the stand alone express version of SQL server is a bit fragile etc)

But if you choose the right options - you can get your own data driven
site running in minutes - and it uploads live almost as easily
(couple of things that stalled me there - but easy once you know)

So ... given the hours I've spent working out the path to here (which
quickstarts don't work etc), I'd be willing to screencast this
experience, either camtasia screen cast (Roland's sort of idea) or
Breeze, if we got that got running -

(my only reservation for kids is that the tool is so slick you maybe
don't see the whole process - but that's another question and soluble

I know VITTA often backs the PHP / mySQL angle, but this is worth a look
and I could host /demo if enough interest - also maybe run as part of
the planned Bendigo PD
