HI Claire,

There is also a modification of GIMP called GIMPShop which looks like
Photoshop, but I haven't used it much.

Cheers,
Jamie

Subject: Re: [Yr7-10it] GIMP photoshop imitations

hi Claire,

I've been using GIMP for years but have not made much headway in getting
other teachers to pick it up, especially the art teachers who regard
photoshop as their bread and butter - hence my request for feedback re
the GIMP photoshop emulators, if anyone has used them

We can still put it on a free CD which can be borrowed in the Resource
Centre

cheers

Bill,

I think it's definitely worthwhile checking out GIMP. It's free! Who
doesn't love that? Schools unncessarily fork out heaps of money for
photoediting software when they could be using FOSS instead.
I've worked with GIMP with students 8-10 previously and they seemed to
cope with transfering their skills.
Give it a go yourself before you decide to implement it though. A
problem I ran into was that other staff members were unaware of GIMP,
so I'd recommend some T&D to make sure that it actually gets used in
all lessons.
I know that when I set my machine to dual boot linux & windoze I end
up ignoring one OS, and that's exactly what the students did with
GIMP. Unless they were reminded of it they 'instinctively' used PShop.
So I'd recommend getting rid of pShop when you install GIMP on the
school's system(s).
I didn't use an app to make GIMP into a pShop clone - just as we
expect people to transfer their skills from one Word Processor to
another i think we should expect them to transfer their skills from
one image editor to another.
