Wow.  What a discussion.  Add Alice to the list (www.alice.org).

In wonder whether we need a "series" of articles perhaps for "Infonet"
extolling the success stories and key features of a range of alternate
programming environments; also published to a Web site for reference??

challenges. 
Maybe the student is ready for real 3D games in C
