Hi Russell,
The aim is to get students to the point at the end of the course where
they present their ideas to the 'organisation bosses'. Eg the group
would put a proposal together for a 'Grand Prix Drivers Cocktail party'
and would get feedback throughout the process plus do a final
presentation for consideration. I would want all elements presented, for
example the project timeline, the marketing material, the budget, venue
hire consideration, security etc. I, of course will be the hypothetical
contact person for the venue etc.
I didn't want to go down the path of 'plan your 16th birthday party' I
wanted them to see it in a more corporate sense but 'events' that would
interest them eg Grand Prix, Spring Racing Carnival, Grand Final,
Fashion week etc.
All of this is very much in it infancy with lots of concepts floating
around my head. How it all appears in the end will of course be
dependant on my time and energy over the coming months.
Reporting on VELS well that's a whole other issue, as an independent
school we are moving slowly but that is our aim. But our whole year 10
program is new next year so it will be 'fun' for all of us.
Thanks for your interest once I have a course together I am sure to
share.
Regards
Claudia

Claudia,
Sorry I don't have any resources to contribute-- I'd think most of
them for such a course would need to be tailor-made-- but I just
wanted to say...
... what a great idea! Could I ask, which VELS domains do you
assess against for that course? It seems to me, after reading about
this, that aside from core subjects, truly interdisciplinary project-
based courses (presumably) such as this could be a very good way to
cover more of VELS, and improve engagement via authentic learning
methods. Will the students have an ongoing project to plan an event,
and is it hypothetical or real?
Cheers
