There is an interesting group called Computerbank Victoria that recycles
donated computers with quality free software and distributes them to
disadvantaged individuals and community groups. Computerbank is run by
volunteers and runs free training in Openoffice and Gimp.

No hardware left behind. Cool :-)
Throwing old computer hardware into landfill just adds to long term toxic
issues. It is likewise foolish and irresponsible to pretend that it isn't
our problem, offloading it to students or thinking that school dumpster
rubbish is recycled. Taking ownership of this problem is an important first
step.

Last year, VITTA issued a position statement on IT waste in their Infonet
and there was a healthy discussion late last year (ironically on the IT
off-topic mailing list<http://www.edulists.com.au/mailman/listinfo/offtopic>!)
I would welcome any updates or new local initiatives we should consider
adding. :-)
