David, here's my response...
If, between us, we can get perhaps someone from the North of the state interested, then I reckon that surely will be incentive enough for VITTA, to 'help us' make it work!
I know nothing about this technically so its all going to be a first for me, but what a first it 'could' be!
I have a great principal who is open to ideas here and it will be up to me to put to him a valid presentation to encourage him to participate. Our techie here will do what the princ. asks and he is a pretty capable techie.
Obviously, a few hurdles will need jumping such as hardware, time, timetabling, room etc. A weekend is not an issue and can be done so thats an option. My pupils in IT I am sure would be rapt to be part of this too.
Realistically, I've done little extra in 07 other than classroom teach due to extra studies I've been involved in so I should be able to make time for this venture.
If you could do me a favour and email me with what you think we need at this end and then I can make enquiries here.
As I said, I cant see a reason not to kick it off. Perhaps a Rural sector of VITTA could be started/launched via this concept.
hmmm Orbost you say, nice little place that! Hope you missed the gippsland flooding recently.
Merry Christmas.

About time, I don't know about you Kent but we have all that is needed, it has been part of my role last year not this year. I went to Perth to see how remote and rural education was handled using technology and we in East Gippsland have been doing it for a while now. The biggest hurdle will be getting people closer to the city involved. (I sound bitter) but for years I've been asking subject ass to run pd using this technology and the reply has always been the same Its to hard! They seem to think that it is easer for us to drive 4-5 hours each way.
On a brighter side I would be happy to work with you in getting this up. I have the VC software "interwise" that could, so they say can host 1000 participants.
The biggest problem is the firewall settings it seams that each school has a different setting, this can be overcome. I would like to set VITTA a challenge or two and 1. reduce greenhouse gas and not make us drive for hours.
2. help develop this communication method. ( we are Information Technology after all)
As I said. We should give it a go, teachers in remote Vic have been doing it for a while now by ourselves.
It's the end of the year and I'm sounding So grumpy!

Hey Adrian, here's a thought..and its indirectly curriculum driven..
How about a virtual PD session including camera, voice and file downloads as means of the presentation. Basically, a teleconference of sorts but the camera angles are wide enough to incorporate say, a room of participants. Granted, some time delay will likely occur of the presenter and the audience but could this be the ultimate with virtual collaboration.
If someone with the right experience was able to assist, I am prepared to perhaps negotiate with my principal to be a venue for such an event here in the Wimmera.
What say VITTA, could we do it?? Is it practical..I reckon yes..cost, perhaps with cameras and phone/internet link and projector with suitable microphones, it could be kept cheap with the right offers of help. Timing? Perhaps early term 2ish ? Topics to cover...obviously virtual collaboration should be top of list..der..but what about how different people are handling the outcomes..
This would be a very sensory display, including most of the media forms. However, this would need to be limited in numbers as only so many can fit into a classroom size environment with cameras, lights etc also in it. Also it would be better to do it during cooler weather for many reasons.
Need..
Venues with cameras and sending/receiving equipment and mic's etc at perhaps 4 venues..one in each of the Northern, Western(me), Eastern(eg Warrigal or say, Bairnsdale etc) and you guys in the City as the 4th and each of us has a link.
Yes it will be tricky to do and I have never done this before but what's to lose? Think of it as a world first! A teachers teleconference on virtual collaboration. Perhaps some commercial sponsors would be interested here to promote their product that could do this?
THINK OF THE BRAGGING RIGHTS!
What'dya reckon AJ..lets try it and see what can be done..live on the edge..!
Hows that for a whizz bang constructive suggestion for 2008! Get in BEFORE our 08 conference.
Any other takers on this one who are reading this? All ideas here absolutely welcomed!! Ok you country folk, I've put this suggestion out there to zero the road miles via virtuality/technology, ..its now up to us to run with this ball!

Subject: [Yr7-10it] VITTA Regional PD
Hi all,
In response to some of our posts about the PD sessions that we will be running early in Term 1, there have been a number of enquiries regarding regional PD. I wanted to say that we have not forgotten about the regions - our posts regarding the Term 1, 2008 PD sessions at this stage have been based on the larger events that we know we will be running. Actually most of our planning for PD will take place at our planning weekend early Feb.
We will do what we can to support those in the regions with good PD - we understand that it can be very difficult to get into Melbourne (as well as expensive) and schools are not always willing to accommodate your requests. We will release some dates and session details early in Term 1 - so look out for them via the lists.
All the best for a great Christmas break and a fantastic New Year!
Regards,
Adrian Janson

Director of ICT,
Melbourne High School
