Easy, Andrew - we are doing it all of the time, no problems.
Go to File>Render then you choose from the many variations possible.
For example, going from avi to mpeg2 both at default big size, results
in a significant filesize reduction (one tenth the size) with no
discernable reduction in quality of either audio or image. I use these
when creating a DVD that will play on a DVD machine for example.
If you are saving for the web, experiment with many of the other
settings available.
You can see on the resources page of the 3in6 website many examples,
that were all done with your program.
