Hello Ross,
Blender is a freebie computer software designed for the gamer programmer. It enables you to create 3D games and supports almost all platforms; OSX, XP, Unix, Fedora (I think).
Gamemaker is another game software (quite good too), but it is only pc compatible- we have Macs here.
More info can be found at www.blender.org
While Kahootz can also be used to design, create simple games, Blender is a much more advanced setup as the interface suggests. Blender is also more of a ground up approach to game making compared to Kahootz where the environment is already provided. Sample Blender games can be found on the Blender site.
At the moment we are designing static 3D models and exploring the very rich features of Blender before we move on to animation and game making- which we'll be able to do in a semester. I'm hoping the Blender experience will catch on as students using Kahootz from yrs 7-9 move through- we are also learning about Basic Control Structures- your fundamental IS concepts as part of the theory of the subject and covering ethical issues in computing- 2001- A Space Odyssey and Air Crash Investigations included.

Hello Roland,
Interesting comments about Kahootz coming up in this forum. We have included Kahootz in the 7-9 IT Curriculum- Greg Bowden has written a tutorial that covers the basics and advanced features of the program and news is it's a real hit.
I'm working on Blender at Year 10 level (very advanced Kahootz for serious gamer nerds)- which the kids have found to be a very steep learning curve. But they're starting to get into the interface- after 4 weeks!
The latest Mac Power Pointless program is a much better animal than the old one- many more interesting features than used to be the case. Although I was very impressed with a student presentation using Lotus Notes.

I set myself the challenge of trying to doing something with Kahootz on my laptop in 40 min on a cold and late train-ride home from the city with no training, no instructions and minimal ideas about where to start etc. Twas easy enough to figure out and this was the product (Kahootz needed to view). Have since explored it further with some year 9's. Has anybody else had a play in the sand pit?
It probably has some scope to replace the 'PowerPointless' activities that some colleagues inflict on students in other learning disciplines. They can expect students to already have had some exposure to Kahootz as they bubble up from the primary.
Regards Roland

Subject: [Yr7-10it] Kahootz in Secondary Schools
Hi all
Had a query from Peter Maggs (Australian Children's Television Foundation - producers of Kahootz)
He is looking for schools/teachers who have got their teeth into using Kahootz in a Secondary School.
They are wanting to get some examples of good practice in its usage with a view to having Schools Television (DE&T) make a program of this with some location shoots (at your schools).
Is there anyone out there who thinks they may be having some success at implementing Kahootz in their school(s) who would be prepared to have Schools TV shoot some footage of their classrooms and the work that their kids are doing with Kahootz?
Please direct replies/ further queries to me (missen.stephen.j at edumail.vic.gov.au) or Peter Maggs (peter.maggs at actf.com.au) rather thay hitting the reply button/link on your email client and "bombarding" these lists with your responses. Hopefully, we will get a few positive ones :) wishing to take up this opportunity.
Cheers
