Hi Sarah

I used XAMPP last year and found it works well. My only complaint is that the inbuilt Visual Query Builder tool did not work well and created some strange SQL.

I used “FlySpeed SQL Query” connected to MYSQL in XAMPP which worked without a problem BUT this is a Windows tool.
“SQLeo Visual Query Builder” seems to have all the same features and will work on MAC  http://sqleo.sourceforge.net/screenshots.htm

Hi Sarah

I’ll be using Access (which doesn’t help you) however you might like to look into XAMPP as a platform to run a SQL server on student devices.

In terms of protecting devices from malware (which was a complaint presented on here a while back), you just have to be habitual in turning the servers on and off.

Hi All,

I am wondering what everyone is using to support the teaching of Databases this year in Unit 1? I have 100% of my students on Macs and have investigated FileMaker, however it’s not cheap!

Any further suggestions as to what works for you would be much appreciated!
