[Yr11 Information Technology] Programming resource

Hi Michael,

I recommend code.org. They have a Computer Science Principles course (free), that includes a Unit on Algorithms and Building Apps. It teaches students how to think and can be made to fit in with the Australian Curriculum. It includes a Simulator, Widgets and an App Lab; which allows for practical activities where students can code and see the results of their work on the same screen. It also tacks student progress. Students can then use the tool to be creative and design a GUI or a basic app of their own.

I believe it is paid for by Google and Facebook but I am not sure. What I do know is, it will get you out of a fix if you have a limited programming background.

There is heaps behind the scenes .. hard to explain without diving in but it is with the support forum, coding solution engine and the progress tracking tool. You can get a budget on-ramp with the cheaper subscription to the GROK Challenge rather than all the modules. There is enough there to tick off the year 11 coding and you can revisit an expanded subscription later. We built it into our annual budget.

They helped to set up my my pre-service teachers with free accounts to get them up to speed with coding. My personal fav amongst their tutorials was the Python and the BBC:Microbit.

I have Apple Macs but have Windows running with bootcamp as well. What language are people doing? Ideally I?d like to teach Python (because it?s easy) but in a simple drag and drop UI environment like VB.

A good example of how to visually map the progress of faiths over time.

Technically, atheists aren?t mentioned. The bulk of those identifying as ?No religion? could potentially be agnostic. ;)

But, yeah a really good resource, Mark.

Michael
