[Yr11 Information Technology] Unit 2 Outcome 2

Hi Everyone,

I also use the NCSS challenge for this assessment and it’s one of my favourite units. The kids learn so much and get really enthusiastic. I split up the assessment with 50% for competition, 15% for a careers investigation, 20% for a test and 15% for their journal entries.

Most lessons I teach a little about general concepts they need and devote a large amount of time to working on the challenge. I tend to teach them how to use the python interpreter on their computer, using the debugger, planning a program, searching for extra assistance, …

There’s also always a couple of kids who need a lot more support getting started and it’s easier to do so in this environment because the stronger ones already have a lot of support in the course to move forward.

Cheers

Ok, I mandate a GoogleDoc Journal with each student to capture the work and time spent. As some of the learning is to be done outside class, I still use some time at school to cover unit 2 theory and other topics. Last year I enjoyed linking up with a year 11 colleague each week via teleconference class to swap solutions and reflect upon answers. Compared to my coding, Catherine totally rocks at programming and inspired my girls to push on to year 12.

I gave away small prizes for random effort etc new syntax errors etc. Occasionally I would have to run something on the zen of time management (points at worksheets to share) or direct a recalcitrant to the Monday homework club (points finger at timetable). If work was not done by the end of the week, I called patents to explain the challenge (huge sigh). Don't leave it to the weekend to do unless you are a teacher.

As for the final certificates, the best (gender balance) are handed out at a school assembly by the college principal & newsletter. Sports and maths already know this routine. Celebrating Coding superstars helps us to inspire the next year level.

Hi Kim,

Last year and this year I’m basing the SAC on the grok learning competition. So that means the SAC spans 5 weeks (which is what I’ve done in the past anyway.) Because they are expected to keep the journal of their learning, pretty much the entire Outcome is the SAC. (As opposed to the usual 3 weeks of learning then two weeks of SAC.)

This year I’m trialling Microsoft’s OneNote Classroom Creator, so I’m expecting all documentation to be kept in OneNote. I think a Word document is sufficient as long as they keep a record of dates with their journal entries. I also make a point of scanning the dates in the journals after each session so students don’t think they can get away with fabricating something right at the end.

I’m structuring my classes such that I’m teaching theory (naming conventions, flowcharts, testing techniques etc.) at the beginning of each session, and I expect that they include aspects of this in their journals (although not necessarily in every entry) as they go – and as the portfolio problems get more complex.

I hope this helps.

I’m a little confused as to how Outcome 2 SAC should be taught & assessed.
Do students complete a set of programming tasks first to get skills (2-3 weeks) and then complete a SAC that has a set of 2-3 programming tasks to complete with a journal or can they complete the programing tasks over 3-4 weeks and complete a journal as they go which will be the SAC? Or is it up to me?

What software tool do you use for the eJournal, does it have to be a blog or just a word document?

I’d appreciate it if someone could explain it to me or let me know where I can get some help.

Thanks,
