Hi,

I tried AppInventor with my Year-10 last term. While it is a good way of teaching programming, I had few challenges. Set-up takes a while and can be frustrating. Once, it is completed, I found students need to have administrator access to launch the Block Editor. Hence, could only work only on their netbooks.
Then were times when few students could not get their Block Editor to launch. They would come in to the class the next day and were able to launch the block editor.

Thanks,
Jayanti Nayak

Hi,

I've found what I think is a great resource to use for programming in unit 2 App Inventor http://appinventor.mit.edu/. It allows students to build Mobil Phone Apps which can be tested on a phone or an emulator. However we don't seem to be able to use it for security reasons, because to run this app you need admin access to the local computer which students don't have. In addition access to command prompt is restricted hence students cannot run the batch file to start the emulator.

Has anyone encountered similar security issues and do you have any suggestions of how we can get around this problem.

Thanks,

Hi Eugene,

Yes an awesome resource to teach the students mobile applications . There
are free texts on line also
(http://explore.appinventor.mit.edu/resources?field_resource_lesson_type_tid
%5B%5D=23
<http://explore.appinventor.mit.edu/resources?field_resource_lesson_type_tid
%5B%5D=23&=Apply> &=Apply under Resources)or you can download completed
applications such as "Where is my Car" which hooks into the mobile device's
GPS capability to guide you to your car wherever it was parked.

As for your security issue, one option is a multi-boot environment which we
use for different classes such as for Networking where students have greater
freedom to change settings and modify IP addresses, proxy servers, etc.

I am not sure whether you can enable additional rights through Group
Policies for App Inventor specifically, but I am in the midst of a project
for higher level students including enforcing group policies for Windows 7
client computers part of a Win2008, Win2012 and Linux servers and will
endeavour to throw this problem in specifically for App inventor and try to
give you an answer.

Are your client computers Win7 running off a Win2008 server domain ?

Take care
