I, too, am teaching this for the first time for many, many years.
I've just spent the whole morning scouring the archives for ideas for transition.
Found some useful links, thanks to posts about this time last year, and I'm also using bits of Mark's powerpoints.

I am going to start the class with this video:

(I started investigating visualisations on youtube and had to drag myself back out!!)

OK. I've got Tableau Public (http://www.tableausoftware.com/public/download) which looks at first glance like a pivot table...

Now I've found Victorian public data at http://www.data.vic.gov.au/raw_data and am looking at getting some juicy traffic accident raw data.

I'm going in. I may be some time...
