Andrew

I guess if you are planning to teach Year 11, I would look at what the
*key knowledge and skill requirements are for the outcome (starting on
page 19 of study design)*. If you then look at what is in the book. If
you look at the study design and the book, you will find that the
authors have spent a considerable amount of time writing content to
support the study design and providing activities that support learning
in these areas.

Sometimes the book might be useful, other times you would make the
professional judgment to use other resources that perhaps you might have
created or sourced by yourself.

It is worthwhile to spend the time to create an document which lists the
key knowledge and skills required for each outcome. You can copy and
paste these from the study design and then use it as a checklist to see
what resources you need to source. Sorry if I sound like I am teaching
you to suck eggs, but it is part of the preparation of teaching VCE and
it ensures that you have all your bases covered, especially if you get
audited.

In your table or Rubric you can then list which bits of the book are
relevant and this would give you a good idea as to how much non-book
resources you would have to create to support the learning in the
Outcome. Giving this document to the kids will show them what they need
to cover as well.

Example:

Key Knowledge

*                  Knowledge point
                   Textbook reference
Learning Materials*
U1O1.1 Stages of the Problem Solving Methodology page
xii-xiv In-house handout

                             vceit.com presentation on PSM

In the first few pages of the Year 11 text book has an*outcomes grid*
that might be a good starting point for you to build this rubric, it is
a worthwhile process to go through.

And yes, I am probably bias in my opinions of the usefulness of the book ..

An exam style test at the end of each outcome is good, and I often throw in past year 12 exam questions (At the moment from IT Apps as U1O1 is now similar in some aspects to what was U3O1 - Not sure if it still is as I have no IT Apps this year?) which gets the students used to the format and style. Some multi choice and "screen dump" interpretation q's from spreadsheets in past IT Apps exams are what I will be using for Unit 1 AOS 1, and even be some design elements q's.
