seminar on copyright and creativity at the Australian Centre for Moving

COPYRIGHT & CREATIVITY SEMINAR FOR TEACHERS AT ACMI - NOTHING BEATS THE
REAL THING! 

'Is it OK to copy this movie for a friend?'
 'Can I take this film clip and put it on my website?'
 'Downloading the latest film release to watch at home's OK, right?'
These are questions that students face almost daily in today's digital
age. However, the answers they receive are not always accurate. That's
where NOTHING BEATS THE REAL THING! can help. Teachers are invited to
participate in a unique NOTHING BEATS THE REAL THING! Teachers' Seminar
to be held at ACMI in Melbourne on Monday 30 August. There is no cost,
but numbers are limited so get in quick!
WHEN: Monday 30 August 2010 Registration 3.45pm - 7.30pm including
drinks & hors d'oeuvres   
WHERE: Australian Centre for the Moving Image Federation Square,
Melbourne, VIC    

   

This late afternoon/early evening program will provide teachers with the
opportunity to explore a new improved secondary school resource which
investigates how copyright, creativity and citizenship shape our
society, its relevance to the curriculum and to students' everyday
lives. 

The seminar brings together teachers from different schools, together
with film industry personnel, to explore the issues involved and the
impact that acts of film & TV content theft have upon our society. 

Teachers of Years 7-10 will benefit most from this program. It is
relevant to the English, Arts, Design, Society and Environment, History,
and Media areas of the curriculum. 

Numbers are restricted to 100 teachers. Once your nomination has been
received you will be sent some material to maximise your time,
understanding and enjoyment of the seminar. 

Teachers will receive a sample of the resource to help them implement
similar Civics and Citizenship programs across the curriculum back in
their own schools. 

There is no fee to attend the Teachers' Seminar. Hors d'oeuvres and
drinks are provided at the end of the session. Also, all attendees will
receive a free movie pass and a copy of the latest edition of Screen
Education magazine and Studies magazine.

4.15 What Kind of Australia Do You Want? - This is a light-hearted
'icebreaker' activity involving a series of questions about the type of
society you would like to live in. 

 
    
 

4.20 IPAF & Nothing Beats the Real Thing! introduction and (re)launch 

 
    
 

4.45 Research findings - How the Australian public views copyright and
creativity and the illegal downloading and copying of programs. 

 
    
 

5.05 Film Piracy - Your Actions Can Make a Difference. A video from the
resource, which sets up a scenario involving young people who need your
help with an ethical issue/dilemma - to download illegally or not? What
would you do and what strategies can you come up with to make more
people aware of this issue and hopefully convince them to stop?
 A facilitator will lead a discussion to make explicit the variety of
key points and issues in the resource and connections to the curriculum.


 
    
 

5.15 Screenrights will outline their work and the work of EnhanceTV and
the role both organisations play in the areas of copyright and
education. 

 
    
 

5.35 Panel Q&A - Influential industry representatives as well as
Screenrights, Ryebuck and ATOM engage in a facilitated Q and A session
and address issues such as the impact of film and television piracy. 

 
    
 

6.05 Hors d'oeuvres and drinks - a chance for everyone to mingle and
exchange ideas 

 
    
 

7.00 Seminar concludes.
