[Yr11 Information Technology] Swinburne free public lecture about Astronomy

Slightly off topic although the free super computing lecture below might
interest some of you. I like the way that Swinburne Astronomy use
GoogleForms to book their lectures, very smart idea :-)

Keep your eyes on the western sky after sunset over the next week. There is
a great looking display of planets shuffling about. If you can snap and
share some photographs, you will enjoy their movement around the sky as they
change places. Won't happen again until 2040 when Semantic Internet 3.0 and
IPV7 is replaced with the open galactic standards imposed on us by the
United Federation of Planets.

for
the online booking form to register for our next free public lecture
which will be presented by Dr Chris Fluke on:

*Date*: Friday 20 August
*Time*: 6.20 pm for a 6.30 start
*Venue*: Swinburne University, Hawthorn Campus, BA Building, *BA201* (see
attached map)

*Presenter:* Dr Chris Fluke, Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing
*Title*: From Games to Galaxies
**
*Abstract*: *
*While you may think of the telescope as being the most important piece of
equipment available to astronomers, the one item that no modern astronomer
can afford to be without is a computer. Whether collecting, analysing,
simulating or visualising data, astronomers require access to ever more
powerful computing facilities - either at dedicated supercomputing
facilities or on their desktop. In the last few years, an unexpected, new,
low-cost piece of computing technology has appeared: the Graphics Processing
unit (GPU). Driven by the multi-billion dollar worldwide computer games
market, these devices are starting to be used to significantly accelerate
the rate of astronomy computation. In this talk, I will introduce this
exciting new world of GPU-powered astronomy, which is taking us From Games
to Galaxies.

*Bio:*
Dr Chris Fluke is a Senior Lecturer at the Swinburne Centre for Astrophysics
and Supercomputing, where he has worked for over a decade. His main research
interests are in astronomy visualisation and advanced computation for
astronomy, with an emphasis on new ways for astronomers to understand
complex, multi-dimensional datasets. He is a member of the
Commonwealth Cosmology Initiative (CCI) - a major project funded by the
Australian Research Council that aims to enhance Australia's expertise in
computational cosmology. As part of the CCI, Chris is working on new
techniques for studying gravitational lensing using graphics processing
units (GPUs). Chris is a keen science communicator and astronomy educator,
and he holds the position of Public Outreach Coordinator for the Centre.
