What can I say Mark? I still feel that many country school teachers, (I.T.) in this case, miss out far too much on PD purely based on distance. Clearly, this is going to disadvantage learning and updating opportunities for those who made the sacrifice, in many cases, to teach at these schools. I for one, love teaching in a country 'town' school for many reasons and am disappointed by the many opportunities thus missed of attending PD sessions and other training courses purely based on travel distance as it could easily add up to $200 per day given fuel/food and accomodation costs...not to mention time for travel and depreciation (or worst case..car rental).
This is the reason I proposed what is now known as the PLN network. Sadly, I am not impressed with the 'way' it has 'worked out' this year with its offerings to those in country/rural venues.
Its also sad that I often feel I am an island in expressing these views when I hear others teaching in country schools in my region also expressing similar thoughts. (but I guess someone has to be the bad guy...and it looks like its me just now)
You know this is a 'thorn in my paw' topic...
Kent.

Dear Kent
As as point of explanation to these rural and regional based workshops
1. They are part of of DEEWR pilot scheme, which will hopefully expand to more locations in 2010
2. There are 20 workshops Australia wide in this pilot [ 3 in Victoria spread across N, E, and W - Bendigo, Bairnsdale, Warrnambool]
3. VITTA has nothing to do with their organisation or delivery
Kind Regards
Mark

A great PD opportunity is coming to rural and regional Victoria
! Integrating ICT Pedagogy into School Communities Workshops
The Federal Government though DEEWR ! is funding professional
development opportunities for teache rs in rural and regional
Australia. [These are not available in any capital city]
They are targeted at Primary and Post Primary teachers of Mathematics,
History, English and the Sciences who wish to integrate ICT more fully
into there teaching
As distance is always a consideration for teachers in rural and
regional schools, this project has a large online component. While
teachers are bought together for a one day workshop, the rest will
build on online support of the workshop convenors and the school teams
throughout Victoria [and Australia]
This program joins together school teams who wish to be supported in
action learning projects that will more fully integrate ICT into the
curriculum
Pre requisites,
..this program is for
1. Primary teachers and Post Primary teachers of Mathematics,
Hi! story, English and the Sciences
2. School teams of 2-5 teachers, [not necessarily from the same
faculty or learning team, although they can be!]
3. Teachers who would like the opportunity to improve the quality
of their curriculum design
4. Teachers who want to meet other like minded teachers
There are no pre-requisites of ICT skill levels, just and interest and
desire in integrating ICT into the curriculum
Integrating ICT Pedagogy into School Communities Workshops has three
phases
Phase One: Signing up to the project. Joining up with the workshop
online site and completing some pre workshop tasks [about 3 hours time
commitment between now and October 16th]
Phase Two: Participation in a workshop in which you can bring along a
curriculum project that you a! re working on and get input and online
resources to integrat e ICT into it. This session will be lead by Hanan
Harrison [a noted educator from Queensland] and myself.
Phase Three: A chance to work on your project back at school, but also
have the support of the workshop presenters and other teachers
involved in this nation wide project
There is a choice of three Victorian workshops
A one day workshop is at Brauer Secondary College, Warrnambool on
Tuesday October 13th 2009
A one day workshop at Bairnsdale Secondary College on Thursday October
15th 2009
A one day workshop at Bendigo Senior Secondary College on Friday
October 16th 2009

Dissappointingly, it seems the North Western region of! Victoria has missed out on a venue for these 'rural' PD sessions.! My nearest is 2hrs away!
What about the PLN network...we didnt see m to hear anything about this before this email.
Scratch up another PD downer for us country folk!
