[Yr11 Information Technology] work request and some thoughts about IT..Kent.

Let me put it like this...
My style of teaching has changed significantly recently due to a range of factors, some forced, others voluntary. Due to a lack of high level skills in some of the software we use nowadays, in many respects, I now source materials to enable the students to achieve a level of learning that allows them to feel they have, and are, moving forward with the software. I suppose it could be referred to as an 'adaptive' learning and teaching style.
Example..
I lack strong skills in Flash and personally, cant stand the software, so I look for sources of tutorials and examples that the students, and me too to an extent, can learn and benefit from and use these in the class room. VB6 programming was new to me last year but I had a programming background so could apply my 'other' skills to a more recent language and that has enabled me to understand the language better but, again, I do not profess to have high level skills, but enough to understand about the language and what it is trying to do and how it is trying to do it.
I feel in the last 2-3 years I have taken a massive leap in my software and web design skills, all via self learning as a result of having to resource materials for my students.

Now, about those who would like my 'program', I generally dont do single lesson plans, not because I cant, but more because the students in my classes have a wide range of abilities so a lesson plan for a single lesson would most likely be innefective, even though some principals and curriculum co-ords would say 'we want that or you're on notice!'.
I usually have an overview of the topics I want to cover and structure and general approach around this using whatever tools I have available...internet, texts, other teachers and my own skills etc.

Another issue we are all dealing with currently is that of VELS. Teaching to cater for a cross-curricular agenda. What I am 'developing' is a style of teaching within myself that tries to account for the needs of the student as well of those of the school curriculum. All this while trying to just survive from day to day in the jungle that is the 'classroom'. To some I might be a dinosaur, to others, I am flexible...just depends on which side of the fence you sit.

In general, I take a topic and develop it dynamically, as I will do with the digital portfolio using ideas from last years conference and adapting the concept to the software and the environment in which I am currently employed. My plan to do VB6 as the next topic is so that I can expose and further students to programming in the hope that some may choose this path for VCE and so, perhaps, offering me not only stability in subjects for VCE but also further opportunity for those who take the subject...not easy in our current climate of games, games and mobile phones!

I am re-learning what I thought I knew every day with each student question.

Hard work at times, but occasionally rewarding.

For those on this list who are new to IT and see me as a potential resource, I'm flattered, but all I will say is this: the software I use currently is all new to me(except the boring microsoft stuff) and so I just get to know some programs and then new stuff comes along that I have to learn or utilize, such as Gamemaker, and Scratch, and Flash...all new to me in the last 2 years and yet I have to 'teach' them. Those experienced teachers reading this know EXACTLY what I mean. I wonder what I will be teaching in the next couple of years?

So, folks, be adaptive, prepare to make lots of mistakes, try new stuff, make some more mistakes, and keep your chin up.
No, there is no moral to this story...it is just a journey I, and some others, are taking!

Kent.

Jenny, just what type of stuff are you after. My coursework is adapted to the students I teach each year and the changing software to be learned each year.
Eg. I am starting with a website design/electronic portfolio/multimedia task then will be doing a VB6 programming unit after that.
I can give you what I have on those if that helps.
