Please don't ever apologise. You weren't being presumptuous, I can imagine what it looks like reading the job description for the first time.
To answer your question, the e-learning position was offically created last year and filled at the beginning of this year. In the past, the Faculty Head and the relevant staff was responsible for conducting a whole school audit of where technology was used, which standards were covered, was the assessment graded or ungraded, etc. We also identified whether or not technology was used to a High, Medium or Low level. By the end of the audit, we were all clearer on where and how technology was applied. It was mainly up to the individual subject teacher, with the support of the Faculty Head, to implement IT in an effective way, remembering it was a tool for learning and not just used for the sake of using IT.
Over the last couple of years, teachers' IT skills have multiplied and it was obvious we needed someone to help refine our methods and help IT continue and evolve. And here we are today...
Have a lovely night, litsa. {:-)

Hi Litsa,
It sounds like you have a truly integrated team working very well together rather than pushing the elearning person out the front to do it all. I think that is the key and the balance sounds spot on at your school. It was presumptuous of me to assume otherwise .. sorry ...:))
Thanks again for sharing the job description.
I do have a question about the journey from the inception of the elearning job to the present. Was it necessary to deconstruct and reconstruct the curriculum in each area or was it a stepwise refinement process to move towards the embedding of learning technologies ?
Thanks again

Hello Kevork,
I totally understand.
As far as I know though, our e-learning co-ordinator regularly liaises with faculty convenors and the director learning and teaching, as well as teaching staff along the way, to help keep up with the whole technology extravaganza. It is a massive job if its done properly. Our e-learning person is so switched on; calm, approachable and highly qualfied to guide the rest of us. He does a marvelous job. But I get what you're saying.
Litsa {:-)

Hi Litsa,
I do worry about some of these statements in the job descriptions. Eg.
"To identify new and emerging computer based learning technologies capable of enhancing the quality of the educational program and outcomes for all students in the College ".
Am I missing something here ?
The poor elearning coordinator has to identify what emerging technologies will enhance the educational programs of ALL students:
1. Integral calculus in maths
2. Appreciation of art
3. Robotics programming
4. English literacy
5. Analysis of geographical features in landscapes and satellite data
6. CAD/CAM in technology
should I go on ?
Can such a person ever be qualified to identify such emerging technologies in ALL educational programs ?
Frankly whoever writes these job descriptions does not understand what an elearning coordinator can and can't do. As long as the word embed is in the statement somehow it makes it ok.
It is the job of the learning area manager and level manager (VELS speak) to identify the technology and then ask the elearning coordinator to assist with its implementation, staff PD and monitoring of uptake. The elearning coordinator has to understand the network, how software can be deployed and how it can be used and applied. If he or she does not then it is best to just let the network manager do this part of the job.
Some controversial statements or really a statement of how things can work efficiently with true successful outcomes ?
Happy to discuss and expand.
Best Wishes

Hi everyone,
Sorry for any cross posts and being off topic perhaps, but:
My school is creating a new position for an "e-learning coordinator" for next year.
Just out of interest, what do existing e-learning coordinators do in other schools ?
Run the moodle, and school website, organize ICT PD for staff on podcasting, vodcasting, and other things, Review software and technology, formulate strategic plans, team-teach helping teachers out with software and technology, and ??????
Thanks,
Paul Pascoe
