Hi Luke,
I guess the issue of whether to offer Cert 2 or Cert 3 is really up to you/your school and your RTO.
At PixelEd we decided that with our limited resources we wouldn't try and support Cert 2 and have focussed on the Cert 3 course. In part, this was due to advice from industry that Cert 2 was not considered a useful qual, also it does not lead to a study score, so therefore, not greatly useful for the majority of our students.
I'm sorry to hear you have found it confusing, most people I have spoken to lately seem to be enjoying the new course (year 1 of Cert 3) and I haven't heard of any major problems with the actual content of the new units (as opposed to problems with the new Cert 2 vs Cert 3 over 2 yrs)
How are others finding it?
As far as textbooks, there is nothing specific to the Cert 3 course around at the moment.
I really like the Natcoll books, they are at about the right level and not too detailed. Have you looked at their material?
PixelEd is investigating various options for developing specific resources, but publishers tend to see this as a dicey market - changes too quickly and fairly small in comparison to the mainstream subjects. However, we have a few avenues we are following up.
Members of PixelEd (yes we are open again to memberships!!!) will find we are developing an online resource collection for members and this should be available very soon.
www.pixeled.org.au will get you to our online portal at VITTA and you can join up from there.
Whilst we are definitely planning to offer PD on the new year 12 course, we are waiting for VCAA advice on the new course and exam. VCAA are convening an advisory panel, but advice is unlikely to be released before November.<<ggrrr>>
Having just spoken to students and teachers at the Museum, I would suggest good prep for your year 11 kids would be to visit the Top Designs exhibition to get a feel for the highest standard at Year 12, what they should be aiming for. The visual diaries on display are amazing and inspiring.
Always interested to hear how others are going!
