[vet-mm] Examiners Report 06

I'm not sure that having scripting as part of the MM Cert III is the problem. From my ( a school teacher's ) point of view it is the theo retical approach to scripting that the exam requires of the students that is the problem. The students can become reasonable practical scripters in the production of their interactive flash game or animated story or whatever task they do during the year. In that situation they have reference books avalable and presumably they have been given enough advice and practical examples to script their project so that it functions properly, acheiving competency. The problem becomes how do you give them enough of an overview and understanding of the syntax and peculiarities of any particular scripting language so they can face any problem and get it right in the time available in the exam. My thoughts are that , rather than banish scripting from Cert III, VCAA need to have sensible limits about what will be required of the students regarding scripting during the exam and give clearer advice to the teachers, so we can cover the requirements in the limited time we have available. I know PixelEd have made representations to VCAA regarding this but it seems to be still unresolved.

I do appreciate that a letter was sent re the exam/s?, particularly the
scripting component, but I not sure whether it focused on following rather
than giving feedback about it, having easier scripting questions or
contesting questions.
I would propose for it to be swapped, or looked into being swapped:
- find out for sure who chooses what goes into the VET Cert III .get an
official answer, if it is the VACC, what process needs to happen before it
can be changed?
- document fully the reasons for such a change ie: swapped for another
competency that gets general agreement
- get a petition going to support the issues
But this sort of thing would need widespread support...probably not only
amongst VET Cert III teachers.
If it is not the Training Package that dictates that VET Cert III includes
scripting, then there should be acceptance on both sides quite easily, as it
must be a pain for the VCAA as well.
If there was any reluctance, then we need to know the mechanism for getting
it changed, as I would think even the VCAA has to take advice in relation to
Training Packages.
There is enough room in Create Webpage's to introduce the concept of
scripting/coding, although its a mark up language, to satisfy (limited
)interactivity in multimedia (hyperlinks etc). and because the Training
Package lets you have this possibility -a "Group B" change, it agrees with
it also, something that cannot objected to.
Given the damage created out of the current situation I would think everyone
would like a permanent solution.
This does not mean that scripting can't be taught or looked at if a
institution wishes to do so.
Or is there enough acceptance of how it is now?

There must be input from VCAA as to which units are included. Perhaps they
even make the final decision. I recall the previous State Reviewer, Dean
Pearman saying that he had been on favour of having scripting included.

Review of the training package is nearly finished, info can be found at:
http://www.ibsa.org.au/content/latestnews/cultural_industries_projects.html
Should someone enquire if the scripting competency can be replaced with
another one out of "Group B".
Generally this is under the jurisdiction of the RTO whose scope it is on.
What organisation dictates that the scripting competency will be part of the
Vet Cert III?

Hi Jacqui,
At the bottom of the document, it says "to be reviewed 31/05/2004", so
is it latest info?
If so, were there more details for each module?
