Hi Paul

I too have taught a combined year 11 and 12 class this year (and it will
also be the case next year). As students are able to work pretty much at
their own pace, not everyone is on the same page at the one time anyhow
so to speak, so it operates well. When I teach to the class or need to
provide instruction/explanation to a particular year level I do so,
however still allowing the others to continue with their own work. I
find it also provides for a very co-operative learning environment as
students consult with one another about problems and issues which makes
my life a lot easier instead of trying to get around to everyone
individually all the time. Also it acts as a good form of revision for
the year 12 students as they are going back over work they have
completed previously. Also my year 11 students benefited from being with
the year 12's as they were exposed to a lot of the project tasks and SAC
work that the year 12's were completing thus providing opportunities for
them to gain an insight or indeed get involved as well. When I had
special guest presentations eg: Network Engineer and Occupational Health
and Safety Officer they addressed the entire class; as it acted as good
revision for those who had already undertaken that unit and
alternatively provided a good introduction and exposure to those
students who were not at stage yet.

Hope this is reassuring

Dear Colleagues,

I have been asked to teach a combined year 11 and 12 VET IT class next
year.

Has anyone taught a combined class before?
If so, was it successful and did you get any time allowance for it?

Thanking you in advance

Hi Paul,
Yes I have taught both Units 1/2 and 3/4 in the same class before. I did
not get any time allowance, as we are a small school. You will need to
be organised though!!! I found that the Unit 3/4 students were more
capable of going on with work with out teacher instruction, as they are
familiar with the how the course runs. I spent more time with Unit 1/2
students to get them going. You will find that when they are working on
tasks, you should still have plenty of time to walk around and assist
all students equally.

Hope this helps in any way.
