[vet-it] work experience

I find a number of different ways to accommodate work placement, but I
do have some students from other schools where they don't release
students during school terms (only able to do work during holidays)
making the choices very difficult. I have mainly VCAL students in my VET
so work placements and the timing of their work placements is a little
flexible and most of my work placements seem to be related to the
education system or community centres in our community, ie Primary
schools, University network centres, our own simulated network and local
community resource and training centres.
Use your Local Community Partnership effectively to do this - most
regions in Victoria have one. I had a 90% strike rate with work
placements last year; the only problem was from a student from a
secondary college with some inflexible work placement policies.
Remember to log all work placement by students!

All correct, Peter. In the end, work experience / SWL is a good
experience
for the students as long as it can be made to be meaningful, which is
the
difficult bit, as employers are often hesitant to let students loose on
their network.

Allan
You're correct Allan, it is work placement not work experience where the
students are actually employed to do work in their field - in our case
IT.
A simulated work place is adequate for this - depends really on your
training environment. They do RECOMMEND students work specified days but
how you accommodate your students and provide evidence that they have
worked in a work environment is really between you and the RTO. Down
the track I suppose if the AQTF and/or NTIS audited the RTO some form of
evidence of some work placements may be required - hence logging is
appropriate.
In saying the above, the new training package does put more emphasis on
the need for some work placement for a specific number of days whether
it be simulated or actual. I stand to be corrected by some people with
direct links to NTIS and the AQTF

While most training packages do suggest that participants undertake
assessments via a workplace, the critical aspects of evidence in each
unit
do stipulate for a lot of training package units that a simulated work
environment is also acceptable as a method of assessment.
While I haven't looked in the training package at the specific units on
the
Cert III IT course, it would surprise me if assessment via a workplace
only
model was mandated, as it would suggest that all students studying this
course - at school, TAFE, university, Distance Education, etc., must be
assessed in the workplace
My understanding is that the only training package where work
experience,
etc., is mandated is in the area of hospitality. The last time I looked,
it
was recommended for IT but not mandated. Happy to be corrected though,
as
this obviously has huge implications for all involved.

James and Reiner
Have a look at my email last week, it is a requirement of the training
package that it is done and the number of days is dependent on which
Certificate you are running. Hope this helps.
I discuss this in a little more detail in my VITTA VET PD session - next
one I'm at is in Warrnambool (4th June). Kevork is running one in
Bendigo and he should give you similar information. Watch out for the
information on these days.

Hi,
James, as i understand it, yes, BUT it is strongly recommended.
I usually work in with our careers teacher/coord. and I make sure that
in our program
of general year 11 work experience [they're all off to Melbourne for a
week] those students work in a fair-dinkum IT area.
Every year it's successful.
There's a task [I set] associated with the experience, i get them to
ferret out some answers to questions which the students have to hand in
at the end of their work experience. Those questions are also emailed to
the place of work beforehand to forestall any difficulties and clear up
any issues their prospective 'bosses' might have.
