[vet-it] Girls and Computing -- from Deakin University

Hi Kushum,

I had two levels of attack:-

Level 1 - I put a notice in the student bulletin for volunteers.
Level 2 - I followed this up with visits to each homegroup and plugged
the activities that they would once they got there, and listening to
successful women in the IT industry talking about their jobs and
experiences etc.

Plugging it at a senior school assembly also might be a good idea if
there is one available. The girls only had to pay the cost of the bus
trip. Lunch was provided by the sponsors of the day if I remember
correctly:-)

Kind regards,

Dear Maria
We have received this info as well. I am interested to know how you
actually sold the idea to the girls to go. I feel if we asked them to
volunteer there is going to be very poor response.

Hi all,

I strongly encourage you all to take as many girls along to this expo as
possible from year 9-11. I took 80 girls along the last time this event
ran and it was excellent. All the girls gave it great reviews and said
that it made them look at IT in a different light, particularly as a
career prospect:-)

Girls and Computing
I am interested in making contact with any primary or secondary
teachers who are implementing programs ( small or large) which
attempt to specifically engage girls in thinking and working
positively with computers. I can be contacted via email at
acraig at deakin.edu.au or by phone on 52272152.

Go Girl, Go for IT
On October 24 and 25 Deakin University will be hosting the Go Girl, Go
for IT for girls in Years 9 to 12. This expo gives the
opportunity for young girls, who are starting their journey of
choosing a career, to see IT as an exciting, creative and fun career
path. The Go Girl Expo provides an interactive experience not only for
the girls but also school career advisors and teachers. The
program provides a diverse range of topics and forums that will
change mindsets that exist regarding the IT industry. And best of all ,
it's free to attend! Please refer to

further details.

Many thanks
