Although I teach Year 10 Vis Comm, we don't actually have an exam, so I am
not sure how helpful I can be. Your subject also seems to be a hybrid
between Art and VCD, which is a further complication as some of the
terminology is different. 
If I did have a year 10 exam, I would probably structure it as an analysis
task: use one of the images that you have studied and one that they haven't
seen.
Ask them questions about who they think the target audience is, purpose,
context, what constraints the client may have given. They could also do a
design question like the Shooting Star one on the 2009 exam paper.
I have attached some possible questions that you may be able to adapt.

Hi Folks,

  This is your friendly mailing list administrator ( also a practicing
teacher asking for your help )


  For the first time, I have taken a Yr 10 Arts VCD combined for this
semester. I have no qualifications in either area.
We have basically covered some photoshop skills and tried to create
montages, vignettes, symbolism , surrealism and dadaism samples.
 We have looked at design elements, principles and the design process based
on the VCD VCE study design.
 I have looked at sample exams from VCE VCD for the past few years for ideas
of exam questions for the end of year exam and whilst they are good they are
definitely a little too hard.
 Any suggestions or samples from teachers out there either directly to my
email or to the list would be great.
