Welcome from the President
------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome back! So much has been going on recently at DATTA Vic that it’s a struggle to remember it all, but here goes…

First of all we had a great DATTA Aus AGM in South Australia with representatives from each state and lots of progressive decisions were made. The biggest news of all is that we are introducing Design and Technology Week! It will probably happen in early term 4 so we will keep you posted, and it will be based on a very successful trial at Northcote High last year. We’ll have lots of ideas and resources for you to use during this exciting and perception changing week!

News from the VCAA

2016 Top Designs

The ** Top Designs (http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/excellenceawards/seasonofexcellence/generalinfo/topdesign.aspx)
exhibition showcases outstanding student works produced for the Victorian Certificate of Education in a range of studies including Product Design and Technology and Systems Engineering.
The exhibition opens on Friday 18 March and runs daily until Sunday 10 July 2016.

Top Designs forums to support VCE students of both these studies are also held throughout this time—the forums consist of an introductory talk from a representative of the VCAA, addressing the School-Assessed Task using examples from Top Designs exhibited works, folios and design plans. This is followed by a presentation by an industry professional, who represents best practice within their particular field of design.
Details of dates of forums are listed on the ** Museum Victoria (http://museumvictoria.com.au/melbournemuseum/education/resources/?epslanguage=en&subject=top-designs&searchtype=prog&topic=Top+Designs&rs=15)

So You Think You Can Design

Our fantastic state-wide design competition for schools is back for 2015, and it’s bigger and better than ever!

It's a fantastic way to communicate the importance of the learning area to your school community, and to engage students beyond regular classroom activities. It will also give teachers new ideas and approached to teaching and learning.

In the SYTYCD Week of Design (21st - 25th March), Participants will take part in a range of fun, interactive challenges which relate to key stages in the design process. Each school will then select 2 winners to submit to the judging panel. From this qualifying round, five schools will be selected to compete at the SYTYCD Finals, to be held at the DATTA Vic conference in May.

So why take part?
* The winning team members will each receive an iPad mini
* The winning school will receive a SYTYCD Trophy
* Accompanying teachers (1 per school) will receive free admission to the DATTA Vic conference
* All runners up will receive a prize in recognition of their efforts

And this year, thanks to Swinburne University's generous support, all finalists will be invited to the ** Advanced Manufacturing & Desig (http://www.swinburne.edu.au/research/strengths-achievements/specialist-facilities/advanced-manufacturing-and-design-centre/)
** n Centre (http://www.swinburne.edu.au/research/strengths-achievements/specialist-facilities/advanced-manufacturing-and-design-centre/)
