[Textiles and Technology] ICT Question for Textile

Hi Jarrod,

I have been teaching PD & T (Textiles) for the past 7 years and am yet to find an effective, easy to learn and use CAD program for Textiles design. I invested $3500 in a program called Fashion Toolbox a few years ago, however it was very complicated and the license only allowed it to be placed on 10 school computers. The support was poor for a beginner, myself, let alone trying to get students to use it. It is an industry program and they assumed prior knowledge and experience. Too much time was needed, and we work on a very small time allotment in Textiles.

I get my V.C.E students to create Mood boards using one of the free online sites, do time lines using Excel, Photoshop images of their products and create tables for their Matrix's, Prod Plans & Journals. They also use their smart phones to record their progress during production, some even use voice recording to keep an initial record, that they then type up. We run a very successful program here, we have had a number of students in the 40's every year.

The ICT is just one part of a very involved set of skills and knowledge required by the students. However, if you do manage to find an effective Textiles design program for schools, please let me know.

Subject: ICT Question for Textile
Hi Sarah,

As discussed I'm a first year teacher (and member). I have a question that I'm hoping an experienced Product Design Teacher or Association member could help me with.

I teach a Year 12 Product Design & Technology class. I have 7 student studying wood and one student studying textiles. I am implementing ICT's into their Folio stage. The Wood students are using CAD and a little photoshop for the advanced students. I have been working with the Textiles student to get her to use Photoshop in her folio to meet her ICT requirements. She is reluctant to use the software because no previous years have used the software and a bigger school down the road do not use ICT's in Textiles.

I was hoping the Association could link me up with a teacher from a school that has successfully implemented ICT's into the Textiles program. I'm happy to learn new software. I believe my biggest problem with this student is the fact that her friends at the other school are not implementing ICT's despite no evidence that this school is actually running a good program. I would like to find a school that does have a good program that we could both learn from.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jarrod Carter
