[Technical] Request re DVD storage on school network

We currently use clickview. Basically, you cannot transfer any copyright VHS/DVD material onto clickview. However if the same program appears on free-to-air you can capture it (clickview 24-7, DVD recorder, digital TV card) and put that in the clickview library.

Format transfer is still a major copyright hurdle. There are some exceptions within fair use provisions, but they preclude the wholesale transfer of footage from a DVD to another format in the way you are describing. One exception is where, for example, a program is only available on video tape, and will never be made available on DVD, or will not be made available in the foreseeable future. In this case there is provision to make your own transfer to an alternate format for private viewing purposes. It does beg the question though - does the fact that the program is not available for digital download invoke this exception ? I suspect that the letter of the law does not preclude it, however the spirit would not have taken this eventuality into account at the time it was written.

Clickview does have a device which is basically a live encoder/webserver that allows you to connect up to 6 (?) devices - VHS/DVD player or recorder/Pay TV box/Tivo etc - and stream video live across a network.

The School I worked at also used Clickview, it's a great learning resource.
If your school doesn't have it you should really check it out.

As far as licensing goes I can't recall as it was a couple of years back.

Hi Folks,

A question on video streaming solu! tions schools may have adopted if I
may.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice on the legality of placing a DVD (
movies, documentaries etc ) on the school network to make available for
students to view when they wish to ..

Do we have a legal problem in that this is deemed copying ? What is the
difference between viewing the movie on a computer screen through the DVD
drive or through a network hard drive ?

If so what solutions have schools used to make DVDs available through the
normal school network ?

Any strengths/weaknesses of particular products or pricing would be
welcome.

Best Wishes
