[Technical] safe removal of usb memory sticks

I advise our students to 'safely remove ...' USB memory sticks.
Occasionally you will get a response from the machine saying 'Can't
stop this device right now ... etc' so I guess sometimes there might
be files open/being written to when I try to remove a stick. Likewise
flash cards from cameras I right click on the device icon (in
Explorer) and 'eject' it before pulling it out.
A coincidence? Maybe - but they are not 100% reliable IMHO. A couple
of companies Mrs Techo has worked in use them as their only data
backup medium. =-O
