We have some spurious network traffic which is slowing down our network at the moment. I suspect a faulty NIC, but I haven't got the time right now to track it down.
Can anyone recomend any useful network monitoring software that doesn't cost a fortune?

network
Having great problems getting .Net to work with a locked down XP
network. Any suggestions ?
Also flash doesn't run on student machines.
Also many machines don't load their profile (and thus can't get
access to net resources) when network traffic is high and delays are
long.
Student login is always 90 sec plus from completing login screen
to operational desktop !!
Is this just an inevitable "improvement" feature of XP (cf Win
98) or are their tweaks or simplifications that anyone has had
experience of ??

You seem to have a lot of network issues, Stephen.
Your methodology will need to be right, involving you sitting down with
your technical team (which, may, for all we know, involve SSO techs,
contractors, student or parent volunteers, key teachers).
Your TSP should be consulted, because he or she can refer specific
requests for help to other TSPs in the subnetwork, including the
coordinator, and to other TSPs and Department employees across the state
by the Techroom forum. You might decide to bring in the support of an
external company.
I'm sure that amongst other things, you guys will:
1. Make sure your DNS and WINS infrastructure is correct (eg not using
10.31.1.1 except as a forwarder)
2. Make sure your cabling, NIC, switching and server hardware has enough
invested in it.
3. The student desktop environment (your school's particular combination
of profiles and Group Policy) is setup to run all apps needed by your
teachers, such as Flash and .Net apps.
4. Profiles are setup in the most suitable manner - this may mean limits
on their size, being mandatory, being local only, being shared from more
than one server at the same time (DFS), using folder redirection, etc.
Cheers,
Clarky
