We've got a work experience student in this week who tells me his school
is using a mapping/GIS app for geography. In case there are more schools
out there that want access to such software but can't afford it:

 http://www.qgis.org/

Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a user friendly Open Source Geographic Information
System (GIS) that runs on Linux, Unix, Mac OSX, and Windows. QGIS supports
vector, raster, and database formats. QGIS is licensed under the GNU
Public License. Some of the major features include:

- Support for spatially enabled PostGIS tables
- Support for shapefiles, ArcInfo coverages, Mapinfo, and other formats
  supported by OGR
- Raster support for a large number of formats
- Identify features
- Display attribute tables
- Select features
- GRASS Digitizing
- Feature labeling
