Important notice to all VCE Product Design and Technology TeachRegarding: Top Designs 2013
>From the DATTA Vic Board

Teachers who are planning a visit to the 2013 Top Designs exhibition, please read the accompanying statement from the VCAA and note:
There is only one example of an A or A+ work in Wood, Metal and/or Plastics for VCE Product Design and Technology.
The reasons for this are varied:
• fewer examples of A or A+ work made from Wood, Metal and/or Plastics were submitted
• work submitted did not score well against the current Assessment Criteria.
• work that was submitted did not meet the expected standards (either folio or product) or was too large/heavy for the exhibition
• some work submitted demonstrated obvious breaches of safety procedures - both regarding the use of banned materials (e.g. MDF) and restricted machinery (not being directly supervised or without documentation of appropriate safety procedures).
• work submitted did not include folio items specified by the selection process

Teachers of Wood, Metal and Plastics students are encouraged to organise a visit to the Top Designs exhibition. Their students will gain inspiration from production and folio work on display from the Textiles material category. In the same exhibition space, Top Designs 2013 will be displaying excellent examples of wood, metal and plastics products, prototypes and design work, developed by past Top Designs students who are studying industrial design at a tertiary level or working successfully in the field.

During 2013, teachers are reminded to:
• encourage the submission of A or A+ work (ensuring that all folio items asked for on the application form are included)
• ensure students understand the current assessment criteria and that each of these need to be addressed for Top Designs - consider checklists
• insist students follow and document safety precautions diligently and that they indicate any processes completed by the teacher or 'others'
• do not allow the use of banned materials
• encourage quality products by emphasising both the 'expected quality statement' in the design brief and completion of the 'quality measures' planning document, encouraging trial processes and also by demonstrating how to achieve quality processes.

We encourage teachers to attend DATTA Vic workshops to gain more familiarity with the current study design and to gain ideas and strategies for teaching.
Up and coming workshops in Carlton at the Statewide Resources Centre are:
• Friday 22nd February, 1.30pm-4pm - SAT workshops for students - attendance can be via Polycom
• Wednesday 13th March, 10am-3pm - Units 1 & 3 for teachers.

We also encourage teachers to attend the following important information session organised by the VCAA

Hi Judy
I know this is a pain, but I've finally got approval to send out the Top Designs letter. Is it possible for you to send this out tonight with the attachment. It would be good if this could go out to our email list and also to destech.
