Dear colleagues
On 29 September I attended an evening seminar conducted by VISTA and
Materials Australia titled Creating an innovative materials
manufacturing sector (and the role of education in making it happen).
The seminar brought together key players from research (CSIRO
http://www.csiro.com/science/AdvancedMaterials.html), education and the
manufacturing industry to identify the key success factors to good
innovative practice. Aspects discussed at the meeting were: the right
mindset for innovation; the right knowledge for innovation; the right
connections for innovation; the cost of innovation and policy
driving/supporting innovation.
Organisations represented at the meeting included:
CSIRO (Manufacturing Flagship)
Swinburne University (Vocation Education Training Sector)
Australian Industry Group (Industry Association)
Furnace Engineering (Small Manufacturing Enterprise)
Box Hill Institute (VET Sector)
Melbourne Apprenticeships ( Skills Development )
Materials Australia ( Industry and Professional Association)
Department of Innovation ( Federal Government)
Evirosyc (Small Manufacturing Enterprise)
Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority
ATTAR (Registered Training Organisation)
Tasweld Engineering (Small Manufacturing Enterprise)
IP Plastics (Small Manufacturing Enterprise)
Inductabend (Small Manufacturing Enterprise)
VISTA (Professional Association for VET Professionals)
Innovation Exchange (Innovation Connector)
Barbara Lepani from the Australian Government's Department of
Innovation, Industry, Science and Research presented on the National

Subject: VISTA & Materials Australia bring you 'Ideas into Actions'
On September 29, 2010 a group of thinkers representing industry,
government, research, education and representative associations came
together at a VISTA Fireside Chat to discuss the national innovation
agenda, the opportunity it presents and the obstacles to that success.
The discussion identified key learnings and success factors aimed at
driving a deeper dialogue around innovation in manufacturing.
The Journey has started. Be on board for Materials Innovation - the
collaboration opportunity (part 1)
RYDGES BELL CITY , 215 Bell St, Preston, Victoria
20th October 9am - 2pm (Includes Lunch)
This session, led by Lisa Smith (Minds at Work), is designed to showcase
the thinking required to generate creative solutions to the obstacles
that stand between us and the truly innovative industry we require.
* Thinking differently - how to turn ideas into actions
* Collaborative thinking - working together to think differently about
our industry and its potential
* Idea generation and concept design - developing creative models of
good practice (and the ways to embed them)
This session will provide attendees with toolbox of thinking skills to
start doing things differently in their own organisation as well as
participating in an important industry wide discussion about creating
workable and powerful options for developing a sustainable innovative
industry. Learn about innovative practice; broaden your networks; find
out who can help your business and how; but most of all challenge your
own thinking and practice!
