Hi Roger,
 
If you run the output signal(s) from the picaxe through a transistor such as a BD 140, that will give it enough grunt to drive the coil of most relays.   A peek at Peter's second picture shows two such transistors on the circuit.
My students have used this technique to drive windscreen motors via a relay in the past with great success.
 
The advantage of using relays is the ability to reverse the motor should they need to.
