I suppose I am somewhat biased having designed a lot of their kits. I, however, did not design the kits you mentioned. (walkie talkie, remote car, forklift and robot arm.) The walkie talkie and Radio Controlled Car are kits from China. Out of all these kits the most questions I get are about the Radio Controlled Car (RCC). There have been problems with some of the information contained in the circuit of the RCC diagrams. These usually have come up with changes by the supplier who didn't inform Scorpio about the changes. I have contacted Scorpio about the changes they need to make and will follow uo to make sure they have corrected them.If you are planning on making up the RCC or the Walkie Talkie it is a good idea to purchase an assembled PCB so you can test your students kits against them. This is because if you have a problem you can't tell whether the problem in in the transmitter or receiver. It just makes it easier to fault find any problems. Of the other kits I have been asked one question about a resistor value used in the forklift, that has been amended. All the kits are meant to get the students to do some design work and so require them to do some thinking and so some things are deliberately not gone into in detail, otherwise there is no design work for the students. And yes they do cost more than buying everything in bulk that's obvious, you don't have to pay the cost of having PCB's designed and made, kits assembled, storage etc. They aren't meant to be the answer to everyone, but some schools don't have the facilities to enable them carry out this type of work without kits of some form. If you have any problems with their kits, contact Scorpio, I am sure that they would welcome constructive critisms to improve their products.
Regards
Neville Young

Anyone else tried using the Scorpio kits? I'm using them with a 10 Systems
class and some 11 Sys Eng students who couldn't come up with their own
design.
Most of my students are finding them quite difficult with vague
instructions. Not having made them up myself, I know I have done the mortal
sin of making sure they work before students start them, but.....
They are doing the following: walkie talkie, remote car, forklift and robot
arm.

Robert,
I have found great difficulty with Scorpio kits.
The instructions are often difficult to read and the components that are in the kits don't always match the instructions.
The remote control car has parts missing. If your stuck, buy in the ready made circuit boards and you will see that it is different.
I try and steer my students away from them.
Regards
Warren

Robert,
I use kits very rarely (only for one off projects and ideas). Have always
built the complete model from PCB right through. Most of those Scorpio kits
are avaialble copyright free from other sources. I can build 10 for the
price of 1, by having the kids produce the circuit board themselves. It's
all part of the process. Buy parts in bulk at trade prices, and everything
is there. No missing parts etc.
The evalaution is always much better when students have to build from
scratch. To be honest, I can't see how you can afford to buy kits. The
cost is prohibitive.

Ray
They are the only kits I have used. I buy in bulk from electus, dse,
wiltronics etc for all my other stuff. Thought I'd try something different
with my yr10s (never run the class before).
Any suggestions on where to find free kits? I'd rather go from scratch.

HI George
I have run a couple of Pd in the past on PICAXE. I am planning on
finishing teaching at the end of this year. And I was considering
running some workshops and individual school PD's next year when I have
more time.

Dear Neville,
I have been using the Picaxe with students for a number of years.
I need to gain PD Points. I am trying to do PD around using the Picaxe
with
students.
After I get rid of my Year 12's we could possibly have a chat.
Cheers George
