[Year 12 SofDev] Curious Question

Hi All,
There’s been an issue with the wireless in one of our classrooms. Flaky would be a good way to describe it. Students have now empirically determined that if they have their laptops on their laps, rather than on the desks, then it’s not a problem. Similarly, they could stand and hold their laptops above the desk, and it’s okay (but not as good as when on their laps). One student did some “research” and declared that it was to do with the wavelength of the wifi. Yet, it seems to be independent of where you are within the room and it’s only manifesting in this one room. Go figure ….
Chris

Hello all
I agree Kevork, it's complicated.
Just to throw in some more technological confusion, I had range issues with my wireless network at home. The internet connected tv in the lounge room was on the borderline of the modem's range - reception was dodgy. Went to JB HiFi and bought a pair of D-link Powerlines (just under $200, so not necessarily cheap), plugged one into the AC where the modem was, plugged the other into the tv's AC, connected the data links at each end, pressed a couple of buttons and problem solved - a wired network through the AC wiring of the house.

Re: [Year 12 SofDev] Curious Question
Hi Folks,
The question is far too general in nature as one can have a very simple wireless network and a very complex wired network and vice versa.
Generally for home and SOHO use I would think wireless is pretty straightforward for a basic setup ( DHCP, dynamic IP address for the internet, WPA2 encryption, SSID broadcast ).
I am thinking about 10 minutes ?? Time required and complexity increase as the security requirement increases from this point on.
For a wired network one still needs to set up DHCP, dynamic IP address for the internet but not WPA2 encryption and SSID broadcast
If port forwarding is needed it is required regardless which of wired/wireless is used.
All in all, wireless has become a lot easier to set up and use. Wired is costly ( $150 - $200 per connection point ) and less flexible.
A wired network can have 802.1x security for the port a device connects to requiring some work to configure correctly, based on either machine or user authentication or no security at all.
Repeat after me -
wired simple, wireless complex .... not necessarily ( see above )
tunneling means increased security - not necessarily (GRE tunnels are clear text )
username and password increase security - yes, but if sent in clear text, they can be sniffed and captured.
All in all it would do our students a better service to discuss the parameters of general statements such as the ones here.

With advances in networking technologies, the question could elicit a correct response in both camps.
A simple wired network can be setup between two devices by simply connecting two devices with a NIC/Ethernet ports using an Ethernet cable. No need for a switch.
A simple wireless network can be setup by connecting devices to a 'personal hotspot'.
Also depends on how you define easier....
Cheers

You can't have wireless network without wired network. Wireless has to be wired somewhere.

Hi all,
If a student asked you which was easier to setup a wired network or a wireless network what would your answer be?
I chose wired

Ben.
