[Year 12 SofDev] Programming languages - unity????

Hi All,
My view on this is a bit different from Marks view (although there is some common ground).
The ‘need/opportunity’ is just a construct to frame how students go about analysing this software solution. While it could be easier/cleaner for a student to have a client to build a software solution for (i.e. produce a program to solve a customer’s problem), there is enough examples of developers producing and selling software based on an idea (i.e. crazy birds – there was no problem that it addressed, although it may have created its own problems … ). But I do agree with Mark, about being careful with project choices to maximise student performance in the assessments.
As Unity is a fully fledged game development engine you’ve got access to lots of “colour and movement”, but as with all games (and software) you actually have to implement some logic – hence programming. Two of the supported languages used in Unity are C# and JavaScript which I think cover the language requirements. But as with all things Software Development it’s all about our students being able to produce their own software solution and cut their own code, and I think using Unity could be part of this.
Cheers

Hi Katherine
I'd be a bit nervous about producing a game. It could hardly be called a 'need', which only leaves an 'opportunity' which could arguably apply.
I know nothing about Unity itself, but it does not seem to be much of a classical language. And SD really loves classical languages.
A certain Mr W. Pedia says it has no flow control, and VCAA's requirements of an SD programming language<http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/vce/computing/SofDevProgrammingRequirements.docx> include the need for control structures for selection, iteration, sequencing.
Apart from that, I'd be asking: will experience of Unity help to prepare my kids for 50% of the year's assessment in the exam?
Some sample Unity code I've found really does not resemble exam pseudocode syntax at all.
Cheers
Mark

Hi all,
Just wondering if any of you have students who want to Unity (to make a game) for the SAT?
Does anyone anticipate any problems in meeting criteria with software developed in Unity?
Thank you in anticipation :D
