[Year 12 SofDev] Question Re SAT need/opportunity

Hi Damien,
Thanks for your input. The only relevant key skill that I can find in U4O1 is “code solutions and write internal documentation”. Without any additional information, you could equally argue that students don’t necessarily need to include loops or if statements etc. I’m certainly interpreting that all of the coding key skills are contained within this one key skill, and am encouraging my students to scope their project accordingly.
Regards,
Chris

Hi Brett,
Just my opinion, but sorting is a Key Knowledge point in U401, therefore it needs to be taught and possibly examined. It’s not a Key Skill so it doesn’t necessarily have to be a part of the assessment, although I’d be encouraging my students to do it as part of basic data manipulation so they have had practical experience doing it, not just class theory. Where possible it’s best to incorporate as many of the Key Knowledge points into every applicable task. With the nature of the SAT, it may be that project your students are does not require any form of sort. I’d be hoping for those students sake that sorts don’t appear on the Marking Criteria for Unit 4 – if they do, it would disadvantage students whose task doesn’t sort and we should be steering them to do a sort now.
Given the breadth of options available to students in the SAT, I’d struggle to find any specific code requirements in the SAT, short of High, Med, Low descriptors for “organise and manage data and files”
Happy to be advised otherwise, but that’s my interpretation.
Cheers
Damien

Why would you have to include sorting? Surely it would depend on the program requirements, which we don't set and the language & data storage combination.

Hi Mary,
U4O1 includes “algorithms for sorting”. I’m taking that as students should be including sorting in their project in order to score maximum marks in Criterion 6.

Hi Mary
Do you mean the program searches the contents of a PDF? Decoding a PDF file would be way beyond the scope of an SD SAC, IMO.
Or maybe a list of PDF filenames is searched for key words and a matching PDF file is loaded by the OS ... that would be achievable.
Otherwise, I'm unsure what the student's requirements are.
Cheers

Hi
I'd appreciate any feedback from you amazing teachers out there.
I have a student who has a need, this need is to read in a pdf document into his program, once a search has been performed the relevant pdf file will load in and display on screen. Is this a viable project? He will also create a form that allows his client to enter data when adding in a new report of incidents..
Sorry about the vagueness. So he will have UI, programming logic, store of new reports and folder containing the pdf documents
Thanks in advance
Mary
