I suppose my question is related to the SD (programming) environment where the study design lists 5 data types:

Character; String; Integer; Floating Point & Boolean

One of the 2012  VITTA exams had a data type question,  where the solutions listed the most appropriate data type for the 'Completed Time' variable was an Integer

In the context of the question it would appear that Completed Time would be an actual time, e.g. 10:45 (rather than a date or year)

I do vaguely remember that times at stored as whole numbers based on the number of minutes past midnight - or something like that

Anyway based on the 2011 VCE exam I'll be teaching my students that times are stored as Integers
