I've attached a document that contains an extract from the VCTA Annual Conference booklet which I think defines the scope quite well

Although it is not in an IT environment it does cover what's included, what's not included and the benefit to the user

Relevant section are in bold

Thanks Philip, a great example.

Speaking of scope, I have taught "not in the scope" as a component where there is not enough money (resources), not enough time, or is to be completed concurrently by another team. Has anyone else got any other situations where a component of a project would not be in the scope?

I am still intrigued by the VCAAs inclusion of "benefits to users" as scope.
