[Year 12 SofDev] ipad as an extra tool

Hi Damien,
One thing I can say is the "S-pen" is the best stylus I've used. I've had two Fujitus Tablet PC over the last 4 years and their stylus were ... well functional ... but not great. The "S-pen" has a much better feel; it is very accurate and overcomes issues (experienced on the Fujitus) of touching the screen with your hand as you write with the stylus.
I've purposely not installed Start8, etc.., and have tried to do things the way M$ say I should i.e. "Windows button" and Metro Modern UI (which I'm getting used to). It just evolution and change which is (should be :)) a good thing.
Regards Chris

Thank you Chris. Good food for thought. Your tablet seems to have pretty much the same specs as the MS one, which recent reviews are not particularly nice about - in particular the stylus.
Re the start menu, on my home PC I installed Start8 (http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/ ) which works pretty well, not sure if it will work well on your tablet.
Cheers

Hi Damien,
Here at Whitefriars we have a PC based technology platform with all students and staff issued with a Notebook or Tablet PC. This year I got my new machine which is a Samsung Series 7 ATIV Pro, which is a Windows 8 Tablet hybrid (i.e. A tablet PC that has a keyboard it docks with, like on some of the M$ TV ads) - so not the Surface (which is a WinRT) but similar to the Surface Pro. I must say in general I'm impressed with it, it's got the benefits of a PC (really computing power) plus the benefits of a Tablet (fast boot, long battery life, etc...).
I've got the full Microsoft development stack installed on it (Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate, SQL Server, etc..) and it works fine (well more than fine), but I do have a second monitor for when I'm doing my development work. As for a teaching tool it's great, although I'm still coming to terms with retaining my brain for Windows 8 and the new hardware (I am a creature of habit).
So in short, IMHO it give all the advantages of a device that's designed for consuming content but give a robust tool that is built for producing content. So when paired with MS OneNote it's the killer education tool (well I hope ... :))

Having said that, has anyone looked at some of the Microsoft Surface Tablets as an alternative to both iPad and laptop? I was looking at the reviews for the new Surface Pro and from what I can see (even with small RAM and small SSD) it will meet all of the requirements for IT Apps and Sof Dev (assuming programming in VB Express).

I beg to differ,
Many students here once they get to Year 11/12 are replacing their laptops with iPads. They can do almost everything and the students do like the convience of the size/weight etc.
I have my Sof Dev text book on the iPad too.
You can code on iPads using apps such as Codea. Apps such as Cargo Bot work really well to teach programming too!
That said, their isnt as much flexibility as a laptop and I would be rushing to limit myself to one anytime soon for VCE IT classes.
Cheers
David

Hi Tony (at I.G.S ?)
Only reasonable use would be as the platform for which you are developing the s/w & this is more applic to android as it is easier to put on device Andrew
