[Year 12 SofDev] iOS/Android Dev

Hi James,

   This is great to allow students access to creating an app as you say in 20 mins.
The issue for us as IT teachers is at what level do we regard a GUI type of app creation as a skill set as opposed to coding or a combination of coding and GUI ?
 What are the transferable skills we are trying to teach ?  where does it fit ? Yr 7 ? 8 ? 12 ?

Which vels standards or VCE IT key knowledge/ skills  does it map to ?
Back to the HTML in notepad vs wisiwyg discussion/argument. ???

I would like to see a combination of these tools and coding. Eg. App inventor has a great interface for Android app creation, and in addition there is work towards creating an interface to show the java code generated by the block building actions on the GUI.

  I can see a storm  brewing .......

Mobile OS ?  Because I am in an iPad community I am in favour of iOS --> Last year at Swinburne I did an android OS half day and it was good (scratch like interface)

If you make separate ones then I will go with both

Today at ICTEV conf the "killer Phrase" for me was  1:1 Self directed learning  both at school and out of school

effectively it is all about students learning  and teachers learning  - not teachers being oracles. There was a lot today about peer tutoring (teachers

->teachers, students - > students  and students to teachers)

Who controls what we learn, what students learn --> the learners.  we can try to control what we tell them but with 1:1 they can control what they learn, when they learn and why they learn.

So with iOS (& Android) we can help them to learn how to make apps that they can use to help others learn and help others with learning.

With Unity they can make games etc that they can export to iOS, Android and web base apps

Today I saw a web base app system , online systems to build simple apps and they are easy

e.g. ibuildapp.com<http://ibuildapp.com>,  www.buzztouch.com<http://www.buzztouch.com>  and others

Apparently there is also red foundry .com  - uses code pieces to create apps,

I am also excited about xcode  but.... (if you have looked at coding in Unity it is not simple but yr 7 students apparently can use the jigsaw

approach)

This year NONE of my VCE students have printed in the classroom. They have iPads, can pdf stuff, upload to dropbox, share it with me,

the old fashioned ones even email me sometimes.

They have insisted on a facebook page (because they are used to it --> I Use email to keep up with the facebook)

People want to learn --> let's help them to do it and help them to extend them selves  and hopefully they will carry us along with them.

3. Windows Phone ?

4. Games for learning with mobile apps ?

5. Mobile learning ?

Yes, the investment is not lost on me.  I just hope xcode is not a negative experience for teachers and students due to its difficulties.

I say this because I have taught XNA/Visual C# to Yr 9 and 10 for more than

3 years and most struggled.

The thing with Adrian (And myself) is that our schools have invested a large amount of time and money into iPad programs and I checked out appinventor and it seems that they only export to android devices?

There seems to be a text on "App inventing for iPhones" by Graeme Summers that I am ordering (Thanks Adrian) and a few of us are trying to organise a new year 10 iOS app development course. If anyone is interested please speak up!

Hi Adrian,

  This is all very useful to all of our colleagues.

I recently completed an Android app writing PD at Swinburne Uni Hawthorn using appinventor ( see appinventor.org<http://appinventor.org> ) and found it very powerful and effortless in transferring to a phone or sharing with other phones. For those who don't have a phone an emulator will still allow testing of the app on Mac or PC. The resources (software, textbooks, completed apps ) are free online. The programming environment is a "scratch" type with no actual coding but a GUI to connect objects, add methods, change properties and parameters. This would translate to a Yr 8 to 10 course so much more easily than say writing code in XNA or in Objective C I feel.

There are sections on using multi dimensional arrays, saving to a database and much more. Is it starting to look like it could slot into Software Development as a language ? Of course the coding would have to be done in Java for it to be acceptable. There are efforts to provide a java view of the Appinventor GUI see http://www.appinventor.org/roadmap

but that would need to be clarified for Units 3 and 4 Software Development purposes.

   An equally useful discussion would be to compare the competing app writing and programming options. eg. Cost of registering as a devloper ?

How much will students understand when writing code in a language like Objective C or C# for that matter ?

   One of the most useful apps in this series I worked on was "Find my car"

which allows recording of the current location using the GPS feature in the phone and then after moving to another location requesting a map showing how to find the car again. This interfaced with a voice feature where instructions are announced on how to find your way back to the car or if they are in the same spot, the family members you may have lost ......

   All very exciting ...

say is that I have been teaching myself x-code / objective c this year

Now that we have about 2250 iPads floating around the college, I was

thinking of implementing an "App Development" course at year 10 next

year that will run for a semester. We have also got a lab of 30 iMacs

and  was going to use them to create iPad apps (Using XCode???). I was

wondering whether anyone does anything similar to this currently, or

has any ideas on what to include. I'd be happy to share and compare

notes and experiences with any interested parties.
