[Year 12 SofDev] Hang on a minute...

I also used an iPad as my device last year, but am still worried about
Mark as 15 years later (Maybe 20 - I think the NES was about 1988 and
the Gameboy followed soon after?) he is still playing his Gameboy and
hasn't moved on to the new generation devices...... Having trouble
defeating Bowser perhaps? J

Hi Adrian. Yes, I do force kids to use a 'really' mobile device for the
SAC. Perhaps laptops can be left off the list in the next study design.

Hi Michael (and all),

You are right - and actually I think in the last few years in
particular, the desktop has been trending down and the notebook up (I no
longer have a desktop at home - whereas it used to be my 'power'
machine).

However, 'laptop' was put into the study as an 'easy out' in some ways -
to soften the blow of developing for a mobile device. If it were not
there - the chorus of disapproval would have been more than just your
email! There are constraints for Notebooks that are worth considering
apart from battery life. You often have to use a touch-pad instead of a
mouse and the resolution is often not as big - small things I know.

Pick something other than a Notebook would be my advice, as it is a lot
more interesting!

Cheers,

Adrian

That's why you have the choice when writing the SAC. Last year I made
prescribed the mobile device as an iPad.

I agree with the sentiments here but you as the teacher can decide what
mobile device you are basing your SAC around. When we have run SD here,
we base "mobile device" around smart phones & tablets that have
constraints of screen size and users fat fingers.

I found this relevant article on flipboard.

+1.

"Netbooks" makes a bit more sense, but most laptops have no more
constraints than do desktops, apart from battery life.

Actually, I've always wondered about the position of the laptop in that
list. What's the difference between designing software for a laptop and
a desktop? If, as I suspect, there is no difference, doesn't it make the
whole concept of designing for a 'mobile computing device' somewhat
redundant?

SD U4O1 KK02- types and characteristics of mobile computing devices,
including:

*	PDAs
*	mobile phones
*	laptops
*	gaming consoles

Gaming consoles (e.g. Xbox, Playstation) are far from mobile - they are
strictly limited by the length of their cords.
If the study design means to refer to games machines such as the
Gameboy, it would have been wiser to add the word "handheld" !
