[Year 12 SofDev] Study design meaning?

Hi all. I originally posted this last December, but there was no feedback.
It still mystifies me...

*SD U4O2 KK03- techniques for measuring the reliability and maintainability
of networks, including audits, errors and software tracking tools*

Can someone suggest how *'errors'* can be a technique for measuring the
reliability and maintainability of networks?

Perhaps examining a log of errors might be useful, but I can't see how
errors themselves can be called a technique.

Any ideas?
