Hi Mark and colleagues
Typically at units 1 and 2 there is a lot more flexibility regarding course design than at Units 3 and 4. Similarly, what is required at units 3 and 4 tends to set the 'tone' for some aspects of units 1 and 2. This is the situation with programming languages. At unit 2, schools are free to use any of the languages in the approved list (which will be published in the June Bulletin). If schools offer Software development it is more likely that they will choose a language from the approved list for use in Unit 2 to prepare their students. However, if only IT apps is offered (or no units 3 and 4), they may want to use a language that better suits the needs of the students, in particular scripting languages.
Teachers might like to contribute ideas to this list about what languages they use at unit 2 and the progress they make with their students. Also, area of study 1, data analysis and visualisation in the 2010 study design allows the use of a programming language to create data visualisations - this might influence the type of language used throughout the unit.
Regards
Paula

Perhaps some guidance on languages for Unit 2 IT would be useful.
The new study design (p.26) says there is no approved language list, but perhaps some recommendations would be valuable for teachers?

Dear colleagues
It's that time of year when we need to review the list of programming languages that can be studied by students in Software development. Currently there is a wide choice of languages, and they include;
Delphi
VisualBasic (not Visual Basic for Applications)/REALbasic
VisualBasic.NET
Visual C++
Visual C#
Visual FoxPro
Pascal (object-oriented variations only)
Visual J, Visual J#, Java
Perl
PHP
Python
Ruby
If you have any suggestions regarding the deletion or addition of languages, please share your views or contact me directly. You could also include a brief rationale to support your suggestion.
