Simply put, game programming to me is less important as a career path than as an opportunity to grapple with problem solving and "Powerful Ideas".
The "Powerful Ideas" include cartesian coordinates, vectors, kinematics etc.
Game programming provides a motivating context for these powerful ideas. Good drag & drop programming tools with "low entry and high ceiling" are essential
