This discussion is great. Just alerting people that there is edulist for
reporting as well.
The problem/ strength of Edulist is that it has so many people willing to
contribute to so many issues.
It is a hard call to encourage seperation of topics.
Nevertheless, I see it as an advantage if people get a chance to select
their interest experitse areas without accepting the extra traffic that may
actually turn them off participation....

Re: reporting:
We are in VERY similar situation to John below, but are likely to use moodle
to collect student reflections for reporting and extract them via SQL and
import them into Markbook.
Are reporting formats have not changed at all this year (i.e. NO recognition
of VELS).
I am hoping for full implementation next year from day 1.
We also are considering a mentoring group as an alternative to form group
(hopefully the simultaneous introduction of electronic attendance a la
sirius will the key feature of daily form assembly)
With online 24/7 editing of student reflections available, I don't think
that this is essential.
i.e. we can require all students to complete their reflection sections
online over the whole semester and just extract on a deadline. The content
will then be an interesting and authentic reflection on the student.

We are also are government school (year 9 -12 campus) using Markbook.
Because we have no regular form meetings all student comments and goals are
collected via a Sharepoint website (all staff have access and can edit all
student input, individual students have permission only to their own
responses). This site incorporates questions to get the kids thinking about
their goals. Their responses to the questions can be utilised by staff to
assist in the further articulation of comments and goals. Student input is
regularly exported out to excel spreadsheet and distributed (emailed) to
staff so they can assist in the checking and monitoring of what is recorded
online. At the conclusion of last semester this information was finally
exported into Markbook. To develop the process further we are currently
organising a Teacher-student mentoring system where each staff member has
been assigned a maximum of
6 students (and hopefully this will build on relationship in the school).

We are a government school using MarkBook but are 'opting out' which means
this year's reports don't change.

CASE21 and MarkBook have xml transfer capability - I've tried it out and it
seems to work.

We will probably have the parent input as a single sheet at the back of the
report package which can easily separated and filled in.

I'm also envisioning an Access DB input for students and then using
MarkBook's 'import results' feature to get the student comments into the
MarkBook DB and the printed reports.

I cannot see us going to QuickVic - seems to rely too much on CASES21 for my
liking plus doesn't have analysis tools or long term db like MarkBook.

We too are wrestling with ways to report individual assessment items to
parents but haven't figured out how to make sure the 'grade' reflects the
A..E rating. For example, a 'C' will represent a 'band' of one year. We
would like to show parents how 'good' or 'bad' that C is, or how different
areas of the subject contributed to that C, without have to resort wholly to
comments - but this is proving to be very difficult!

I have looked at the Department provided software QuickVic (no cost) and it
is very similar to Markbook (written by same company) a download is
available to play with at
http://www.semaphore.com.au/quickvic/index.php?option=com_content&task=s
ection&id=7&Itemid=51.

Regarding the student input. We are in the process of creating a Access
Database and giving students a choice of topics (up to three for year 7's eg
Maths, organisation, spelling etc) and up to three items that they can pick
in each area to work on (eg. Use diary, set specific time to do homework).
Students will be able to input their choices and towards the end of the
semester type in their comments on how it worked.
I hope that we will be able to link it to QuickVic but if not will print out
separately and attach to reports.

Hi All,

We have Markbook and think it is great. How are others who are using it
working with the Reporting People in their schools to implement the new
report cards? Are you totally changing your report formats or are you
cutting and pasting and including the mandatory sections and adding other
parts that your school wants or going for the least line of resistance.

How is your school going to deal with the Student input section? Are they
going to type directly into markbook? Or are they going to hand write a
separate page? The logistics of them typing into Markbook will be something
to work out I think?

Will your parents have a tear off section to return to school later?
What are you going to do with this?

Hi Michael,
The import and export facilty in Markbook is excellent. It imports CSV files
in a very systematic manner. I have used Markbook since 2000 in conjunction
with Maze (similar to Cases21 - supplied by CAZ) which was used as the
timetabler package previously. We have now moved to The Timetabler which can
export the relevant Markbook files in the CSV format. Is CASES21 used for
timetabling? If your timetable package can export the required fields easily
and stored as a CSV file, you can easily import them into Markbook.

I will be happy to give further advice if you wish as I have been a Markbook
Administrator since its inception in our College as well as a timetabler for
three years before handing the job back to a teaching staff.

Hi Laurie,

You might be right about the cost but it took 10 hours of solid work to
create the working model based on our school's needs (including deriving the
algorithm as per department guidelines) - I wanted a challenge!
Funny thing is - our school has yet to decide whether to go FM Pro or
Markbook but I suppose they still need to see a working model anyway.

Can I ask - since we do not have Markbook - How well does it integrate with
Cases21 and other programs - Do you have to export and then import data via
a txt/csv file and vice versa OR can Markbook directly access data from the
data files of other programs?

Please provide some info.

Michael
