Hello all,

The VITTA office would like to announce an exciting new event* *for Primary
to Middle Years teachers.

Games for Learning (and for meeting your VELS requirements as well!)
Paul Callaghan, Freelance Education Consultant

Games and Game Design allow a number of interconnected disciplines to
interact with each other -from story writing to art to programming to
design. This workshop takes a game from its initial idea through various
stages in development, demonstrating how traditional literacy and numeracy
skills can be applied to game design, the planning process involved in games
creation, how to deconstruct and manage large numbers of ideas, and how to
brainstorm and creatively solve game related problems.

Date: Friday 27th March
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Venue: VATE Conference Room, Suite 2, 134-136 Cambridge Street, Collingwood
VIC 3066
Cost: VITTA Members - $240 | Non-Members - $300
*Register:* Online at www.vitta.org.au/trainingevents

Please note, lunch and refreshments throughout the day will be provided

Contact: VITTA Office | 9495 6836 | pd at vitta.org.au |

Paul is a freelance writer and game developer. Over the past 10 years, he’s
worked as a programmer, designer, writer, and teacher in the games industry
both here and overseas. His credits include Men In Black 2, Heroes of the
Pacific, and a, sadly cancelled, game based on a long-running BBC
science-fiction series. His cross-disciplinary experience has led him to an
interest in linguistics, games as learning tools, meshing narrative with
gameplay, character and story development, literacy and numeracy, and the
philosophical underpinnings of how games work and what they can teach us
about ourselves.
An active member of both the development and education community, Paul has
presented on topics such as writing for games at Freeplay and the National
Screenwriters’ Conference, the fundamentals of play at Game Connect Asia
Pacific, what education can learn from game development at the Victorian IT
Teacher’s Association conference, and the basics of game design at ACMI
events and career expos around Melbourne. He has also appeared on ABC2’s
Good Game show discussing games addiction and our need to play, and taken
part in the 2008 Victorian ICT Achievers mentorship program.
